Leona Pearl Voorhees, 88, Spearfish, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Dorsett Regional Senior Care Center in Spearfish.

Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis on Friday with the family present to receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Mr. Joe Hobbs and Mr. Mike Henry officiating. Burial follows at the Whitewood Cemetery.

Leona was born August 17, 1921, at Ireton, IA, to John and Frances (Popma) Schuller. She grew up and attended school in Iowa. She worked in Sioux City, IA.. She met Ralph Voorhees in Iowa and moved to Lead, SD, where she worked for the Pooles family. Ralph and Leona were married June 15, 1940. To this union, five children; one daughter and four sons were born. They lived on a dairy farm in Bear Butte Valley. They later moved to the State place near Spearfish and then in 1951 they moved to Arpan, SD, and farmed and ranched on the Sam Bober place. They moved to a dairy west of Spearfish, SD. In 1971 they sold the dairy and moved to Whitewood, SD, for a number of years. After Ralph retired they moved to Spearfish, SD, and lived in the Hickory House Apartments. Leona continued to live there until March of 2009, when she moved into the Dorsett Home.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris (Buddy) Chafee, Spearfish and Cheyenne, WY; sons, Richard (Beverly) Voorhees, Gilbert, AZ, Ron (Carol) Voorhees, Caldwell, ID, Fred Voorhees, Spearfish, SD, and Ray (Peggy) Voorhees, Spearfish, SD; one brother, Lawrence (Lorene) Schuller, Ireton, IA; three sisters, Marie Loerts, Ocheyedan, IA, Shirley Van Iperen, Spirit Lake, IA, Muriel Roscam, Hospers, IA; grandchildren, Jewel Chafee Panelli, Barkersfield, CA, Jill Chafee Lerwick, Albin, WY, Wayne Voorhees, Denver, CO, Heather Voorhees Prall, Westminster, CO, Sheri (Voorhees) Roe, Arlington, TX, Kimberly Voorhees Klor, Midlothian, TX, Jenny Voorhees Miller, Arlington, TX, Chrissy Voorhees Nelson, Carrollton, TX, Amanda Voorhees Pearcy, Boise, ID, Nathan Voorhees, Nisland, SD, Kenton Voorhees, Belle Fourche, SD, Cameron Voorhees, Nisland, SD, Summer Voorhees Nelson, Tulsa, OK, Brady Voorhees, Doon, IA, Chase Voorhees, Fargo, ND; also 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, her parents, one brother, Wayne Schuller, and two sisters, Vera Foos and Darlene Veldcamp.
