Obituary

Visitation for Leonard Milberg Wilson, 92, Newell, will be Fri., Sept. 29, 2006 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to services at the church in Newell.

Funeral services will be Sat., Sept. 30, 2006 at the First Lutheran Church in Newell with Rev. Deb Geelsdottir officiating. Burial will follow at the Wilson Cemetery.

Leonard died Thurs., Sept. 28, 2006, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Leonard was born April 24, 1914 at Newell to William and Hannah (Milberg) Wilson. He graduated from Newell High School in 1933. Leonard was married to Roann Mayhan at Miles City, Mont., October 14, 1939. They lived in Belle Fourche and Newell.

Leonard worked for the South Dakota Highway Department for a short time and then he started to ranch and farm at Newell. He raised sheep and was one of the foundation breeders for Targhee Sheep breed. Leonard was a member of the US Targhee Sheep Breeder Association Hall of Fame and US Targhee Sheep Breeder Association.

He was President of the Targhee Sheep Breeder Association for four years, served on the Newell School Board several years, and was SD Woolgrowers Director. Leonard received an award for being a long time supporter for over forty years of the Newell Ram Show and Sale. He raised numerous Champion Rams and Ewes and had sheep that were exported to Bolivia, South America.

Leonard was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Newell and the Moose Lodge for 37 years.

Survivors include one son, Dick Wilson, Newell; three daughters, Carolyn Russo, Meadville, Pa., Marion Case, Newell, and Jean Wilson-Pankonin, Windom, Minn.; one sister, Evelyn Aschenbrenner; ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Bill and Harold, one sister, Lillian, and one great granddaughter.
