Obituary

Lewis J. Patterson, 85, Deadwood, passed away on October 28, 2016, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born May 8, 1931, in Bad Axe, Michigan, to Lavina and Peter Patterson. He was raised in Michigan and South Dakota and joined the U.S. Army November 16, 1949.

As a member of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, Task Force Smith, Pfc. Patterson was captured by enemy forces on July 5, 1950, near Osan, Korea. Pfc. Patterson spent the next 1148 days as a Prisoner of War. For his service, he was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged in 1953.

Lewis enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working outside. He lived a full life and will be missed by his proud family and many friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie Patterson; three grandchildren, Vanessa (Anthony) Puopolo, Andrew (Andrea) Foxworthy, and Lewis J. Patterson III; a sister, Isabelle (Bob Miller) Carter; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; and son, Lewis, Jr.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Father Bill Zandri officiating.
