Lila A. Stout, 88, Elk Point and formerly of Sturgis, died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at the Prairie Estates Nursing Home in Elk Point, SD.
Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Rev. Herbert B. Cleveland officiating. Burial will follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Lila was born October 6, 1923, at Rapid City, SD, to John and Helena (Bulgrien) Rhoden.
On September 3, 1944, she married Thomas Stout in Neligh, NE. They lived in Georgia while Tom completed his obligation to the military. The couple ranched in the Bear Butte Valley from 1945 until 1949 when they moved to Neligh, NE, to work the Stout farm.
They returned to Sturgis in 1966. Lila received her teaching degree and went to school during the summers to obtain her masters degree. She taught in the Newell School district until her retirement in 1989.
She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Rebekkahs, the Westerners, and the Butte County Historical Society. She was a founding member of the Newell museum and a member of the Sturgis VFW Auxiliary.
She lived in Sturgis until 1991 until 2007 when she moved to Elk Point.
Survivors include her son, Mike (Onita) Stout, Rapid City; daughter, Mary Jean Bok, Dakota Dunes, SD; four grandchildren, Miranda Bok, Dakota Dunes, Elizabeth Stout, Maple Grove, MN, Reilly (Amanda) Stout, Rapid City, and Kathleen (L.J.) Panas, Galveston, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, and one brother.
A memorial has been established to the Newell Museum and the Sturgis VFW Auxiliary.
