Lillian Edna (Calvert) Lushbough, 102, Sturgis, SD, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Lillian was born on February 12, 1904, at Humboldt, Nebraska. She was one of five children born to John and Agnes (Davis) Calvert who came from England to Nebraska in 1887.
The Calvert family lived in several Nebraska communities where her father was the Methodist pastor. She graduated from Plattsmouth High School in 1922 and from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1926.
She taught High School English in Northbend, NE, where she met her future husband, Allen A. Lushbough. They were married in York, Nebraska, on July 6, 1931. They lived in Harrison, NE, until moving to Sturgis, SD in 1935 where they owned and operated Lushbough's Hardware until 1962.
Lillian was a member of the Sturgis United Methodist Church, serving on many local, district, and conference boards and commissions. She was state president of the Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service 1961 – 1964 and Church Women United 1970 – 1973.
She served on the Sturgis Library Board, State Library Commission, and the Governor's Committee Children and Youth.
She was South Dakota's Mother of the Year in 1963.
She was a member of Chapter AY, P.E.O., Order of Eastern Star, Federation of Women's Clubs, A.A.U.W., NRTA.
After retirement, Lillian and Allen spent three years in Nagaski, Japan teaching English at Kwassui School. They traveled extensively, but always loved returning to their home in Sturgis and their cabin in Spearfish Canyon. Their home was always open to all travelers, students and their many friends. They were married for 71 years before Allen died in 2002.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bruce and Ila Lushbough, Brookings, SD, and John and Carol Lushbough, Vermillion, SD; Austrian A.F.S. son, Walter Eigner, Vienna, Austria; sister-in-law, Mida Hester, Whitewood, SD; five grandchildren, Chip (Julie) Lushbough, Blue Springs, MO, Kathryn (Phil) Lombardo, Rochester, MN, Allen Lushbough, Ashville, NC, Tim (Jena) Lushbough, St. Louis, MO, John (Jennifer) Lushbough, Sioux Falls, SD; great grandchildren, Bryan and Madison Lushbough, Christopher and Matthew Lombardo, Brendan and Kael Lushbough; several nieces and nephews. Step-grandchildren, Barbara (Mike) Sollars, Davenport, IA, Janet (Matt) Proctor, Slater, IA, Sharon (David) Wentzy, Sioux Falls, SD; and six step great-grandchildren, Hayden, Erin, Jordan, Spencer, Katie, and Mia.
Her husband, parents, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis or the Sturgis Public Library.
Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 21, 2006 with Pastor Keith Nelson officiating. Private family burial will take place in the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.
