Obituary

Lloyd Frank Fletcher was born January 7, 1929, in Aberdeen, SD. He lived with his family in the Aberdeen area until he was 5 years old. He attended many rural schools in South Dakota including Nisland, Newell, and Deadwood. He graduated from High School in Omaha, NE.
Lloyd enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1948 and served through June 1952. During his time in the service, he was a Damage Controlman 3rd Class on the LST 1138. This ship participated in four major beach landings during the Korean War; Inchon, Wonson, Iwon, and Hugman. He received the Korean Defense Service Medal.
On March 3, 1955, Lloyd married Kay Reich in Dupree, SD. The couple lived in the local areas of Dupree, Isabel, and Faith before moving to Medicine Bow, WY, where he was the foreman on the Robbers Roost Ranch. While in Medicine Bow, Lloyd served as the Post Adjutant and the Post Commander for the American Legion.
The family returned to South Dakota the summer of 1968, where Lloyd was employed by the Homestake Gold Mine and Phil Town Inn. Eventually, he became a self-employed general contractor, building many homes, remodeling residences and businesses in the area. Lloyd retired in the mid 90's but continued his love of woodworking. He could be found out in his garage most evenings building bread boxes, corn hole games, and marble boards. He also entertained neighbors and passers-by by carving animals in the tree stumps in his yard. Lloyd was an avid horseshoe pitcher and was a participant in many tournaments throughout the area. He won many trophies but he had three that were his favorites 1) his very 1st trophy, 2) his 3rd place finish in the World Horseshoe Tournament, and 3) "The Worst of the Best" he earned after having a bad day with the area's best horseshoe pitchers.
Lloyd Fletcher, age 90, of Sturgis, SD, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019, at the Department of Affairs VA Hospital at Fort Meade.
