Obituary

Lloyd D. Short, 82, Piedmont, left for his heavenly home on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospice House of the Hills.

Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, November 29, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with Father Mark McCormick officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.

Lloyd was born June 18, 1928, at Mud Butte, SD, to Joseph and Novice (Titus) Short in his Grandmother's home, delivered by his Grandmother Titus. Lloyd was the third of six children. Lloyd lived in the Mud Butte area on the breaks, where he farmed and ranched with his family until 1946. Growing up, Lloyd broke and rode horses, fished and swam, and occasionally went roller skating. In 1946, the family moved to Piedmont where he raised registered Hereford bulls and cattle. Ranching was Lloyd's lifelong passion.

Lloyd was drafted into the US Army on February 5, 1951, and served during the Korean conflict. He received his honorable discharge on February 5, 1957.

Lloyd married Coleen Hickey Harmon on November 23, 1984 and with this union came five stepchildren and seven grandchildren. Like everything else in life, he took this in stride and loved his new family as his own.

Lloyd and Coleen continued in the ranching business, incorporating Saler cattle into the Herefords. He had a great love for his animals and nothing made him happier than being able to walk through a herd of cows with newborn calves.

The last few years, Lloyd's health required him to sell off the cows and slow down a bit but he kept back two cows and his horse "Bud Lite". He truly loved the ranch life and the great outdoors, and he instilled this love in his stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Grateful to have shared in Lloyd's life are his wife of 26 years, Coleen Short, Piedmont; five stepchildren, Richard (Sabrina) Harmon, Newell, Myra (Bruce) Fees, Rozet, WY, Lori (Tony) Koch, Gillette, WY, Tina Hayton and special friend Bryan Murphy, Paducah, KY, and Becky (Robert) Boylan, Newell; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Boe, Sundance, WY; two brothers, Darrel (Marcia) Short, Pocatello, ID, and Sam Short, Lewistown, MT; numerous nieces and nephews; his two special pals, "Bingo" and "Squeak", and one "Natty" cat.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leo and Denny, brother-in-law Bob Boe and nieces Serena and Sally.

A memorial has been established.
