IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lois Janette
Haines-Mcinerney
January 11, 1923 – January 29, 2021
Lois Janette Haines-McInerney, 98, died peacefully on January 29, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Lois was born to Albert and Elizabeth (Peregrine) Schuelke on January 11, 1923 in Mud Butte, SD. She was the 5th of 13 children. She lived on her parents' ranch and later graduated from Spearfish High School. After high school graduation, Lois attended Black Hills College and received her teacher's certificate. After which, she taught grade school at the Olson-McDermott country school for a few years.
In 1943, Lois married Dale Haines of Maurine, SD. Together, they operated a ranch and raised their seven children: Marty, Jackie, Mikki, Connie, Linda, Mike, and Squeak. In 1971, Lois lost her husband, Dale, of 28 years. In 1976, she married Ted McInerney. After running an antique store for several years, they moved to Sundance, WY. Lois and Ted enjoyed drives through the Black Hills and hosted many family get-togethers at their home in Sundance. After Ted's passing in 2002, Lois moved to Spearfish, where she lived the remainder of her life.
Lois was adventurous and enjoyed traveling. In her earlier years she traveled with Dale across the US buying bulls, hunting elk in the Tetons, and taking an annual pheasant hunting trip. She also thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Canada, Alaska, Glacier National Park, and even tried her hand at snorkeling and hula dancing on a trip to Hawaii. Lois enjoyed reading, a good puzzle, and spent many hours playing cribbage, pinochle, or canasta with her family and friends. Lois was involved in several bowling leagues throughout her life and spent lots of time tending to her yard and garden. Quilting was yet another passion of hers and many family members are blessed to have a quilt made by her loving hands.
Lois was as strong and resilient a woman as any. She spent many hours in a swather and helped with all aspects of the ranch. She sure had her hands full raising her kids and the many escapades of her husband, Dale, but she never turned down the opportunity to open up her home to anyone that needed it. Whatever challenges life threw at Lois, she never lost her generosity; numerous individuals benefited from her big heart and open arms.
Her biggest pride was her family. She marveled at her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments, always gently pushing them to be the best that they could be, while still loving them deeply for who they were. She took great pride in the success of the ranch and the fact that it remains in the Haines family today. Until the very end of her life, receiving a visit from a family member brought her deep joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Elizabeth Schuelke; her first husband, Dale Haines and their child, Marty; her second husband, Ted McInerney and his two children, Teddi and Brian; one grandchild, Riley Robert Haines; five brothers, Bob, Everett, Darrel, Dean, and Harold; and five sisters, Lola, Faye, Berma, Earleen, and Mamie.
She is survived by her six children, Jackie (Ed) Logan, Mikki Brugman, Connie (Roger) Hawley, Linda Gram, Mike (Holly) Haines, and Squeak (Roxie) Haines; one stepson-in-law, Dan Essink; one stepdaughter-in-law, Mitch McInerney; one sister, Margaret "McGee" Vansickel; one brother, Jerry Schuelke; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., with visitation beginning one hour prior, on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at the Prairie Home Church in Faith, SD with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
A memorial has been established to the Mud Butte Volunteer Fire Department.
