Obituary

Lois E. (Huddleston) Skvicalo was born in Wasta, SD, to Lee and Mayme (Miner) Huddleston on March 26, 1933. She was raised in Piedmont and Sturgis, SD. After graduation from Sturgis High School in 1951, Lois went on to marry her husband, Blas Skvicalo of Lead, on November 23, 1953. Not long after their marriage, Blas joined the United States Army, which brought their new family to Fort Bliss, TX, for three years before returning to Lead in 1957.
Following their return to Lead, Lois worked alongside Blas as a bookkeeper for Brown Swiss Dairy, Co. In her later years, Lois assumed the roles of bus driver and head custodian for Lead High School, growing very fond of all of the students who passed through over the years. She spent her retirement split between taking care of her grandchildren in Minnesota, and her and Blas's family ranch 10 miles south of Lead. Her time was most often spent touting her grandchildren around town and mentoring them towards success in life. Lois dedicated her life to sharing her heart of gold, providing relentless and unconditional love and care to her family and friends.
Lois E. Skvicalo, 87, died Thursday, June 18, 2020, following a courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. Her profound loss will be felt deeply by all of those who knew her; her inviting smile and warm touch serve as everlasting memories of Lois.
Lois is survived by her brother, Bill (Darlene) Huddleston of Buffalo, WY; her sons, John (Cathy) Skvicalo of Lead, George Skvicalo of Savage, MN, and Mark (Tami) Skvicalo of Lead; her daughter, Mary McNeary of Minneapolis, MN; six grandsons; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Blas; her father, Lee; her mother, Mayme; brothers, Bud and Red Huddleston; sisters, Myrtle Malen, Betty Dubry, and Leona Casteel; brother-in-law, Pete Skvicalo; sister-in-law, Nickie Johnson; and son-in-law, John McNeary.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 22, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2020, also at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Zane Pekron officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, south of Lead on Rochford Road.
Two memorials have been established in Lois's name to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and to the Lead-Deadwood Booster Club.
