Lois Mae Sorensen was born at Deadwood, South Dakota on October 14, 1933, to Herman and Agnes (Fenner) Kettelhut. She grew up in Deadwood and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1951. After graduation Lois started working as a Bookkeeper at Fish & Hunter Company. In 1955 she was married to Elmer Sorensen at Deadwood. The couple lived in Deadwood until moving to Pluma in 1957 then on to Nemo in 1991.
Lois worked in the Lead-Deadwood school district starting as a teachers-aide then on to be the elementary librarian. Most of her free time was spent at the cabin, first at Mystic then Nemo with family. After retirement Lois spent many hours working on crafts, painting, and crocheting. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lois, 92, Nemo, South Dakota died Saturday, October 3, 2026. Eleven days short of her 93rd birthday.
She is survived by her sons, Don Sorensen (Julie), Rapid City, and Mark Sorensen (Lisa), Deadwood; daughter, Becky (Doug) Halbur, Hadley, MN; two sisters, Betty (Cecil) Stoner, Rapid City, and Shirley (Larry) Rounsevell, Spearfish; four grandchildren, Melissa (Ross) Kreun, Edgerton, MN, Michelle (Brooks) Little, Sioux Falls, SD, Brad Halbur, Hadley, MN, and Chris (Brookelyn) Halbur, Slayton, MN; and eight great grandchildren, Karson and Maddyn Kreun, Peyton, Jaxton, and Jayde Little, Brinley Halbur, and Haddie and Hayes Halbur.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; sister, Arlene Schopen; and two brothers-in-law, Cecil Stoner and Ralph Schopen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Grace Lutheran Church in Deadwood with burial at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
