Obituary

ois Arline Engle Thompson, 100, Sturgis, died Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the Fountain Springs Health Care Center in Rapid City.

Lois was born February 12, 1907 at Piedmont, SD, to Harry Abner and Blanche H.(Pinkerton) Engle. She attended elementary and two years of high school in Piedmont. She graduated from Rapid City High School. She attended Huron College from 1925 until 1929 and graduated with a degree in mathematics. She obtained her master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1930. She returned to Piedmont where she taught math and German from 1930 until 1931.
Lois attended classes in speech and drama at the University of Colorado during the summer of 1931. She taught math and speech at Elkader Jr. College in Elkader, IA from the fall of 1931 until the spring of 1939.

Lois married LeRoy Thompson at the Edward and Carrie Thompson Ranch East of Sturgis on September 2, 1939. The couple made their home on a ranch on Alkali Creek.

Lois was a member of Eastern Star, DAR, Daughters of the Nile, Rebekahs, a 4H leader, UPW, AAUW, Idle Hour Club, and a group of local artists called the HIMMEL club.

Survivors include her son Ed Thompson, Sturgis; one daughter Nancy (Phillip) Harlan, Arlington, VA; two grandchildren, Daniel and Peter; one sister in law and cousin Peggy Thompson, Sturgis.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 8, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Denzel Nonhof officiating. Burial follows at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
