Lordena C. Whalen, 79, Sturgis, died Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Friends may gather at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis prior to leaving for the cemetery.
Lordena was born February, 3, 1930 at Herried, SD, to Mike and Emma (Quaschnik) Hout. She attended school in Pollock, SD.
She married Albert R. Whalen at Herreid, SD, on June 24, 1950. The couple owned and operated a restaurant at Pollock until 1964 when they moved to Lead. Albert worked at the mine and Lordena worked in housekeeping at the Deadwood hospital. They retired and moved to Sturgis. Lordena worked at the Sturgis hospital in housekeeping for several years. She also worked at the Meade County Senior Center. She was a people person and enjoyed others company. She also enjoyed crocheting, camping, and catching the biggest fish.
Survivors include her sons Carter Hout, Rapid City, James (Rena) Whalen, Newell; brothers, Kermit Hout, New Brighton, MN, Arvin Hout, Corinth, TX; one sister, Darlene Huft, Bismark, ND; three grandsons, Jory and Jaren Whalen, Adam Hout; one granddaughter, Danette Hout; one great grandson, Ian Hout; one great granddaughter, Becca Kish; one special great niece, Sara Huft.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Mervin Hout.
