Obituary

Funeral services for Lorraine Edith Swenby, 82, of Gillette will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, S.D., with the Rev. Michael Fox officiating.

She will be buried by her husband, Selmar, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Swenby died Friday, May 18, 2007, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of complications following surgery.

She was born at home to Howard and Elisabeth (Ford) Emerson, one of five children, on Sept. 26, 1924, in Lucus Township, Menomonie, Wis.

She met Selmar in high school. After he graduated and was drafted into the military, she followed him to San Bernardino, Calif., where they were married Feb. 8, 1944. He was deployed to Europe and she returned to Wisconsin to await his return.

They made their home in Wisconsin, where they raised seven children and operated different cheese factories until 1965. In 1969, the family moved to Sturgis, where they owned and operated the Sturgis Dairy.

They sold the cheese factory and she worked at the Prospector Gift Shop in Deadwood until 1976. They enjoyed traveling but always returned to their Sturgis home, family and friends.

Mrs. Swenby was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gillette, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Sons of Norway.

She is surved by her sons, Roger Swenby of Parkston, S.D., Terry Swenby of Pukwana, S.D., Donald Swenby of Sturgis and David Swenby; her daughters, Jean Hohn of Lino Lakes, Minn., Marjorie Swenby and Lisa Wilcox, both of Gillette; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Louisa Pinch of Woodville, Wis., and LaVonne Wang of Atlanta.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, one sister, and two grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to benefit the Disabled American Veterans.
