Louie Scherer went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 8, 2015. He passed away at Sturgis Regional Hospital at the age of 89.

Louie was born in Dallas, SD, on November 10, 1925, to Cecilia (Gordon) Scherer and Van Scherer. He grew up mostly in Lead and Whitewood. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served his country for 4 years.

Louie married Agnes Thompson on February 22, 1947. He worked at Homestake for 25 years and MSHA for 16, residing in Sturgis for 9 years; Hauber, WY, for 3-1/2 years; Lead, 9 years; Vincennes, IN, 2 years; Hebron, OH, for 2 years; Alameda, CA, for 12 years before retiring back to Sturgis in 1987. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the VFW, and the Elks club. During retirement, he enjoyed making wooden puzzles and diamond willow canes.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes, Sturgis; five sons, Rodney (Maria) of Battle Mountain, NV, Larry of Lead, Patrick (Kathy) of Sturgis, Mark of Helena, MT, and Louie (Angie) of Sturgis; one daughter, Cecilia (Brian) Davidson of Lancaster, OH; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vivian Davenport of Kingman, AZ.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Bob, Joe, Bernard, and Charlie.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 12, 2015, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7:00 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2015, at St. Martin's Chapel in Sturgis with Father Timothy Castor as Celebrant. Burial, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
