Obituary

Sally was born February 22, 1926, to Jesse James and Alice Lucille (Ellis) Overacker, 13 miles south of Faith, SD, near Box Butte. She attended grade school in Red Scaffold and Faith, SD, and graduated from Faith High School in 1945. After high school, she attended Spearfish College in Spearfish, SD. Following graduation, she taught at the Plainview School.
Sally married her high school sweetheart, John Robert "Bob" Hlavka, on December 29, 1945, in Killeen, TX, while Bob was serving in the Army. To this union, three children were born: Jeanny Raye, Janet Kaye, and Douglas Robert. They also raised her nephew, David Lawrence (Little David), after his mother passed away and while his father was in the Navy.
Sally was an avid reader, sometimes reading several books a day. She loved fishing with friends, family, and neighbors. They always took the first fishing trip of the season on Mother's Day and fished every Sunday until the snow flew. She could never pass up a good fish fillet and thoroughly enjoyed when Bob Hansen showed up with his fresh catch ready for the frying pan.
She was a passionate gardener and could grow most any flower or vegetable. Her garden usually fed the whole family with plenty left for canning in the fall. She was the "go to" for any gardening or canning questions and was more than willing to give advice to those that needed it.  Each spring, her deck would be filled with beautiful flowers; her favorites included moss roses, petunias, and geraniums. Sally would spend the early mornings watering and always kept her plants vibrant and healthy.
Bob and Sally also loved to dance. They taught their kids how to dance and enjoyed all the community dances. To raise house money and keep the kids busy, Sally raised hundreds of chickens, geese, ducks, and turkeys. She spent many hours sewing clothes and embroidering keepsakes for us all. She enjoyed beating everyone in cards, scrabble, and of course, horseshoes. According to family, friends, and neighbors, she was the best pie baker of all time. She knew everyone's favorite and made it for them when they came. She continued to bake pies for brandings and always made Ed Hawks a triple berry pie. Ed always said it was the only reason he came to help.
Sally was an active member of her Church, Women's Society of Christian Service (WSCS), and the Plainview Extension club for over 40 years, where she served numerous times as every officer. She was a 4-H leader for many years and head of the Faith Stock Show exhibit building for 31 years. She enjoyed seeing all of the exhibits and was blessed to have seen not only her children's exhibits but also those of some of her grandchildren.
Lucille Marion "Sally" Hlavka, age 93, passed away at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, SD, on April 18, 2019, surrounded by her family.
Sally is survived by her children, Jeanny, Janet, and Douglas (Valorie) Hlavka; grandchildren, Johnny (Kris) Fairbanks, Lynda (Arlie) McMichael, Jody (Larry Ross) Simpson, Jade (Annie) Hlavka, and Leann Hlavka; great-grandchildren, Agnes Fairbanks, Luke Fairbanks, Seth Fairbanks, Jacob Hinojosa, Bryce Campbell, Tory (Adam) Marks, Tehya Campbell, Ashten Simpson, Cody King, Kaylee King, Laynee Simpson, Waylon Hlavka, and Zeke Hlavka; great-great-grandchildren, Milo, Olive, and Theo Marks; and sister-in-law, Delores Overacker.
