Luverne Lavina LaPlante was born December 27, 1932, in White Horse, SD, to William and Mamie (Jewett) LaPlante. She attended school at Cheyenne Agency and graduated in 1950. She met and married Herbert A. Cummings on August 25, 1951, and they shared a life together for 51 years raising 13 kids. Herbert passed away in 2002.
Luverne's hobbies include playing Canasta, Bowling, Cribbage, Skipbo, and Yahtzee. Mom and Dad's house was always open for family and friends and the coffee pot was on 24/7. Countless hours were spent at the kitchen table playing Solitare. A lot of backyard memories were made at this house. Dad and Mom enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends near or far, a lot of fishing, and camping trips were made and she always had a warm smile for all.
Luverne Lavina (LaPlante) Cummings, 88, of Sturgis died January 12, 2021, at her home in Sturgis.
Luverne is survived by her children, Michael (Melissa) Cummings, Taos, New Mexico; Dana (Juanita) Cummings, Rapid City SD; Debi Smith, Yelm, WA; Herbert A. Cummings, Sturgis, SD; Brenda (Kevin) Smith, Columbia, IL; Stuart Cummings, WA; Robert Cummings, Sturgis, SD; Mitch (Wendy) Cummings, Rapid City, SD; Emily Cavins, Fairbanks, AK; Lauren (Alan) Neiger, Black Hawk, SD; Charlene Keller, Rapid City, SD; Scott Cummings, Black Hawk, SD; and Tracy (Thomas) Tremain, Owosso, MI; brother, Allen LaPlante, Sturgis, SD; sisters, Edith Knight, Cherry Creek, SD; and Rita (John) Birkeland, Dupree, SD; sister-in-law, Barbara (Ben) Newcomb, Davenport, IA; brother-in-law, Richard Cummings, San Jose, CA; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and Mom's guardian angel, Kris Walker.
Luverne is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mamie (Jewett) LaPlante; spouse, Herbert A. Cummings, and a grandson, Bodhi Smith.
Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2021, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sturgis, SD, with Reverend Bunker Hill officiating. Due to Covid-19 masks are required and please respect everyone's personal space as there is limited seating.
