Lyle David Grubl, age 80, originally from Sturgis, South Dakota, passed away on June 18, 2026 in Mesa, AZ after a short illness. He was born on August 25, 1945, in Deadwood, South Dakota to Louis F and Edna V (Barnes) Grubl.

Lyle spent his early years growing up on the family ranch on the Alkali divide near Sturgis. He attended the Middle Alkali rural school for his first eight years of education, where he was the only student in his grade. He later attended school in Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School.

Although ranch life left little time for school activities, Lyle still found ways to participate in sports and was very active in 4-H. After high school, he continued his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Lyle had a lifelong love of horses and especially team roping, participating in many ropings throughout the 1970s.

Lyle served as a medic in the National Guard during the Vietnam War era. Following college, he began working in the lumber and building industry with Lampert Lumber in Rapid City and Belle Fourche, where he designed homes and worked closely with home builders. In 1972, he began a career in real estate with Lewis and Kirkeby Real Estate. After several years in the Rapid City market, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he continued selling real estate for approximately 20 years.

In 1996, while visiting friends and family in Rapid City, Lyle met Diane, a Rapid City girl who became the love of his life. Diane soon became his reason to return to Rapid City, where he later went back to work at Coldwell Banker Lewis-Kirkeby. Lyle and Diane were married in 2003.

During their 30 years together, Lyle and Diane shared a love of travel and adventure. They visited many remarkable places, including Europe, South America, South Africa, Puerto Rico, Maui, Mexico, and destinations throughout the United States and Canada. They especially enjoyed traveling by camper on many of their trips across the U.S. and Canada.

Recently, Lyle and Diane split their time between their homes in Rapid City, SD and Mesa, AZ.

Lyle will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his ranch roots, his love of horses and team-roping, his adventurous spirit, and the many years he devoted to real estate and the people he served. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and the life he built with Diane.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leo. Lyle is survived by his wife, Diane; his brother, Eddie; his sister-in-law, Iva; his nieces, Georgi Ann (Delbert) Cobb and Liz Grubl; his nephews, Chris (Vera) & Barney; his stepchildren Lanette (Jeffry Olson) and Lonnie Yancsurak (Shannan); and his five grandchildren, Avery (Andrew), Jack, Bodie, Beckett, Evie and a great grandchild Miles. Great niece Ashley (Brett Price) great nephew Clint(Donelle) Adam(Karly) Lucas (Kymber) and an amazing group of great nieces and nephews. A celebration of Lyle’s life will be held this fall in Sturgis. Details will be shared when available.
