Lyle was born July 27, 1947, in Sturgis, South Dakota, to Melvin and Anna Mae (Sisk) Hendrickson. He graduated from Sturgis Brown High school in 1965. Lyle attended Black Hills State obtaining a BS degree in social work. He started his social work career with the Department of Veterans Affairs at Fort Harrison, Montana. Lyle returned to Fort Meade, South Dakota and retired after 28 years of service.

Lyle loved the outdoors, especially the Black Hills. Lyle was an avid fly fisherman, until his health would not allow him to wade the wate  rs that he loved so much. Lyle turned to the boat, fishing for walleye with his son Treavor.  He enjoyed NFL football games and would sit by the phone awaiting his weekly bets with Treavor. He rarely picked a favorite team, but he followed the Chicago Cubs, Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Golden State Warriors. Lyle's all-time passion was watching his granddaughters play basketball and volleyball.
