Obituary

Lyle Victor Vandenberg, 83, of Deadwood, SD, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on December 3, 2015, at the Black Hills VA Health Care Facility in the hospice unit at Fort Meade, SD.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial with military honors will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Lyle was born January 24, 1932, to Gertie (Brandt) and Cornelies VanDenBerg in Lodgepole, SD. He attended grade school in Perkins County, SD, and graduated from high school in Lead, SD, in 1951. He then enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and served during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1955.

Lyle married Helen (Aijala) on February 13, 1954, and they had 8 children. He worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry for several years in California and moved to South Dakota in 1975 where he worked for Karns Machine in Central City, SD, until retirement in 1998. He was a highly regarded machinist during his career and was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Lyle loved camping, fishing, and traveling in their motorhome before having to slow down for health reasons. During his later years, he enjoyed watching the wildlife and visiting with family and friends at his home in Grizzly Gulch. His family always enjoyed hearing stories of his childhood.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; sons, Duane Vandenberg, Jeff (Nancy) Vandenberg, Gary (Toni) Vandenberg, and Dale Vandenberg; daughters, Janet Peck, Diane (Rick) Bracha, and Mona Reiling; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Herman (Ruby) VanDenBerg; sister, Ella (Vic) Heppler; and special friends, Bob Keller, Chad Jacobs, and many others.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters; 1 brother; 1 son-in-law, Gary Peck; and his beloved daughter, Doreen.

A memorial has been established to the Deadwood VFW.
