Lynn Walter Finch, 74, Hot Springs, died of a pulmonary embolism on Friday, August 2, 2013 at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, SD. He was born July 17, 1939 in Durand, WI to Ernest Lynn and Frances (Barber) Finch. He spent his childhood years in Wisconsin and moved with his family to Hot Springs in 1951. As a youth he engaged in Boy Scout activities, hunting and fishing. At the age of 13 Lynn developed an interest in amateur radio operating. He earned his FCC license and was an enthusiastic HAM. He took great pride in the communication services he provided during floods and other emergencies. Lynn's beautiful tenor voice was well known in the community. He sang in the choir at the United Churches and was a member of the All State Chorus for three years. He enjoyed singing pop tunes of the 1950's with a dance band led by the school music instructor, Gail Hilgenberg. Throughout his life he would occasionally burst into his favorite song Be-Bop-A-LuLa. After graduating from Hot Springs High School in 1957 he joined the United States Navy. During his 20 years of service to his country he had tours of duty in Guam, Newfoundland, Vietnam, aboard the Hospital Ship U.S.S. Repose and several bases within the United States. Lynn and Rosita Taitingfong were married in Guam October 20, 1962. They had one daughter, Frances. In 1977 he retired from the Navy, enrolled in computer programming classes and became a Network Specialist for the Arizona Department of Economic Security. Lynn married Barbara Trumbull on June 4, 1993 in Scottsdale, AZ. He retired from the AZDES in September 1998 after being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He returned to his beloved Black Hills in 1999, where he hoped a peaceful life of again enjoying the pastimes of his youth would lead to his recovery. Survivors include: his wife, Barbara, Hot Springs; daughter. Frances Fogle and granddaughter Rosie Barrera, Mesa., AZ; sister, Donna (Ron) Leonard, Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Michael (Marlene) Finch, Milford, MI and sister, Delsie (Jim) Smith, So. Dennis, MA. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Rosie' and his parents. His family is grateful to the staff at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living Facility in Tripp, SD for the exceptional care, compassion and kindness he received during the last three years of his life.
