Mae Anna Strohschein, 88, of Newell, SD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 26, 2019.
Mae was born March 16, 1930, to Amel and Anna Flaigg on the Flaigg Homestead near Hoover, SD. She joined 7 brothers and 2 sisters.
Mae attended country school and talked often of riding her horse into a cold east wind, uphill. She would tell us that the horse didn't want to go either, but it was the law that you had to go to school.
Mae lived on the Homestead until she met and married Charles Strohschein. She would say she "found a man with sideburns, a good-looking man with sideburns." From this union, 5 children were born: Morgan, Nita, David, Karen, and Karl.
Mae enjoyed visiting with family and friends and taking care of her beloved donkeys and kitty cats on the farm. She loved living in the country and watching her favorite television programs. Her favorite actor to watch was Tom Selleck in Quigley Down Under. She would comment on how good-looking he was and say "you can look, but you can't touch."
Mae is survived by her 4 children, David Strohschein, Karen Lang, and Karl Strohschein of Newell, SD, and Morgan (Marcia) Strohschein of Belle Fourche, SD; her sister, Rose Sundstrom of Grand Junction, CO; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nita Vandermay; great-grandchild, Payton Kracht; her parents; one sister; and seven brothers.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at the Newell Evangelical Church with Pastor Tom Martin officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Hope Cemetery in Newell.
