Marcella "Sally"
Haltiner
August 22, 1943 – March 27, 2026
Marcella “Sally” Haltiner, 82, went home peacefully to her Lord on March 27, 2026, surrounded by her family at the Monument Health Hospice House. Born on August 22,1943, in Hague, ND, Sally grew up on the family farm, along with her six brothers and three sisters. She was educated at the Odessa country school. Her first marriage to William Paul brought her to the Lead-Deadwood area. They had three children: Kevin, William and Laurie.
Sally was always known as a hard worker. She bar tended for many years at the Casino bar where she met and married the love of her life, Herbert “Herb” Haltiner on August 12, 1976. They had two sons: Jason and Michael Haltiner. They raised their family in Lead, SD. Sally was a true social butterfly. Her captivating smile and giggle would brighten anyone’s day. She loved and was loved by her Lead-Deadwood community. Many fond memories were made working, dancing, and socializing at the Lead Moose Lodge. She especially enjoyed working several years as a bus driver for Black Hills Special Services. Sally was incredibly skilled in cooking and baking, especially German cheese buttons and Kuchen. She was a gifted seamstress and crafter and could replicate anything from memory. She lovingly patched many of her grandkids’ clothes and made their Halloween costumes. She enjoyed fishing, catching big buckets of bullheads. She loved to dance the polka and waltz, and play pinochle late into the night.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Sally leaves behind her husband of 49 years, Herb Haltiner; her children: Kevin Paul, William (Dawn) Paul, Laurie (Ronnie) Johnston, and Michael (Nicole) Haltiner; cherished grandchildren: Haley Collins, Sara DeGroot, Marcus Berger, Casey Johnston, Trevor Johnston, Addison Paul; eight precious great grandchildren; siblings: Eugene Fischer, William Fischer (Lupe Lopez), Diane Beck, Darlene Fischer (Jim Phillips), Robert Fischer, Gary Fischer, and Marilyn (Dean) Schell; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Sally is joyfully reunited with her son: Jason Haltiner; parents: Adam and Clara Fischer; brothers: Kenny Fischer, Donnie Fischer; and grandson, Joseph Johnston.
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
