Obituary

Margaret Jane Scott, 100, Newell, died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell with the Rev. Arnold Kari officiating.

Burial followed at the Hope Cemetery, Newell.

Margaret was born May 17, 1906, at Pisgah, Iowa, to Stephen and Mary Ann (McCabe) Morrow. She grew up in Wagner, one of 13 children and she attended school in Wagner. Margaret received her high school education at Ravinia in the eastern part of the state. Upon graduation she attended Springfield, where she wrote for her teacher's certificate. Upon completion of her education there, she furthered her training and received her second certificate from Mitchell College (Notre Dame).

In September of 1926, Margaret began her career in education as a teacher in Charles Mix County. Four years later she came to the Newell area and began her long service to the county and the district as teacher of the Highland (Milberg) school east of Newell.

Margaret married Martin E. Scott June 22, 1931, in Wagner. The first two years of their marriage they lived in Wagner and from there they moved to Wessington and farmed for eight years. They moved to Corvallis, Ore., where Martin worked for a logging company, and then they moved to Newell.

After taking leave for a number of years in order that she might raise her three children, she returned to teaching in 1958 at the Chase School, followed by a couple of years at the Orwick School, then on to the Arpan School, and then she retired from the Nisland School in 1973.

Survivors include one daughter, Loraine Kafka, Newell; two sons, Marty and Sharyl Scott, Newell, Gene and Mary Scott, Rapid City; one sister, Patricia Palmer, Vancouver, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, 11 brothers and sisters, and a grandson.
