Marietta Kimball, 89, of Newell, South Dakota passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013 at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish, SD.
Marietta Alexander was born November 16, 1923 in Sturgis, SD to Earl & Elsie (Wood) Alexander of Vale, S.D. She married Garrett Kimball on November 14, 1942 while he was on furlough from the Army during WWII. They celebrated their third wedding anniversary right after Garrett returned from WWII.
She attended rural Butte Co. Schools, graduated from Vale High School in 1941 and attended the National College of Business in Rapid City, SD. Marietta worked for the McMahon Company in Rapid City while Garrett was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII.
For twenty-five years they lived and raised their family on a farm 3 1/2 miles west of Newell. When they retired in 1975 they sold the farm and bought a house in Newell. In 2006, Marietta sold her home in Newell and moved to Spearfish where she has resided since.
Marietta was a member of the Aladdin Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, PTA, Secretary to the Horse Creek School Board, member of the Pollyanna Extension Club for thirty-seven years, Clerk-Treasurer of the Butte-Meade Sanitary Water District for ten years, the Butte-Lawrence County Fair board Treasurer a member of the First Congregational Church in Newell where she served as Treasurer, Clerk for the Newell Ram Show, and bookkeeper for Goeringer Farms.
She enjoyed bowling, crocheting afghans, embroidery, traveling, reading and crossword puzzles. She made 150 afghans for all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and future great grandchildren as well as many others.
Survivors include Donald (Sue) Kimball of Tucson, AZ, Sheryl (David) Hunter of Belle Fourche, SD, Douglas (Connie) Kimball of Henderson, NV, and Susan (Wayne) Lettau of Sturgis, SD. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Marietta was preceded in death by her husband Garrett, who passed away on Sept 23,1981 in Denver, Colorado, two infant sons, Daniel and Dale, her parents, two sisters, Dorathy Ashley and Bonnie Keill and a brother Glenn (Buzz) Alexander.
Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with the family in attendance.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Newell Christian Fellowship Church in Newell with Pastor Sean Carney officiating. A fellowship reception will be held at the NVN Senior Center in Newell following the service. Burial will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD following the reception.
A memorial has been established to benefit of Northern Hills Hospice, Edgewood Vista and the Newell Christian Fellowship Church.
