Obituary

Marlene JoAnn Daane, 84, Sturgis, died Monday, December 31, 2018, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Marlene was born February 16, 1934, in Dell Rapids, SD, to Dr. M. Chandon and Alida J. (Anderson) Dietrich. During Marlene's childhood, the family moved to Sioux Falls, where she later graduated from Washington High School. The young Marlene Dietrich's early childhood was dominated by her tap-dancing pursuits, and her skills were showcased through performances at various venues and gatherings throughout the area.  Additionally, Marlene's childhood was equally dominated by her devotion to caring for her younger brother, Marty, who passed away at the age of seven due to complications related to cerebral palsy. Marlene continued her commitment to caring for others by earning her three-year Registered  Nursing degree through Augustana College/Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls and upon graduation, she began her nursing career at Fort Meade VA Medical Center. Shortly after arriving at Fort Meade, Marlene met the love of her life, Boyd "Pug" Daane, and the couple were married in Sioux Falls on May 11, 1957. The couple resided in Sturgis, where they raised their two sons, and Marlene continued working at Fort Meade until her retirement in 1992. After retiring, Marlene continued to care for her family, and enjoyed casual trips to Deadwood where she made many lasting friendships. Marlene will be remembered and missed by all those whose lives were touched by her loving and caring nature.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Boyd Daane, Sturgis; two sons, Douglas (Allyson) Daane, Rapid City, and Gary (Glenda) Daane, Spring Creek, NV; grandchildren, Jason, Erin, and Chancy; great-grandchildren, Lydia and Max; brother-in-law, Albert Daane; her cousins, Roger and Marilyn Reiff and Ann Kempees; two nephews; and five nieces.
