IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marlys Jane
Meyer
January 31, 1936 – August 25, 2021
Marlys Meyer, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Fountain Springs Health Care in Rapid City.
She was born to Les and Maxine Tippey on January 31, 1936. She grew up on a small ranch in Whitewood, SD, where she attended elementary school. She attended high school in Sturgis where she graduated. On November 28, 1954, Marlys married Jim Meyer. They made their home in Sturgis along with their two daughters, Deb, and Sandi "Jayne".
Marlys began her career in 1965, at Ft. Meade Federal Credit Union, renamed Meade Plus FCU (presently Northern Hills FCU). She was hired as a part-time Manager, Manager-Treasurer, and eventually promoted to President-CEO. She loved her work and the people she met in the many years she worked there. She retired in 1991, and was inducted into the Credit Union Hall of Fame in 2010.
Jim and Marlys did many fun things during their lives together. They purchased an army tent for ten dollars and a used boat and started camping and teaching their daughters to water ski, swim, and fish. They bought a couple of BMW motorcycles and jetted around with her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Dick Miller, and Jim's brother, Tuffy Meyer. They also took square dancing lessons and danced frequently in the area. Along with Tuffy, they bought some beautiful land in the Black Hills by Deadwood. They built a one-room log cabin where they made many wonderful memories with family and friends. Ever the risk taker, Marlys took flying lessons and soloed in a small plane they bought with Tuffy. Gardening was a favorite thing to do. She had a beautiful lawn and flowerbeds. She did so many fun things with family and friends. She put many miles on her cribbage board, always enjoying a good challenge.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church all her life, serving as an Elder, was involved in numerous committees, and played in the Bell Choir for many years.
Marlys is survived by her daughters, Deb (Nels) Christensen, Harrisburg, Sandi "Jayne" (Bryce) Sigman, Sturgis; six grandchildren, Kellie (Jason) Steinmetz, Cody (Mary) Christensen, Tyler Christensen, Breezy (Jon) Millar, Tabitha (Jess) Harris, Cassie (Tyler) Hicks; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Tippey, and Betty Griffin; brothers-in-law, Vernon "Tuffy" Meyer (Bonnie), and Bill (Judy) Meyer; and several nieces and nephews
Marlys was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, of 62 years; parents; sister and brother-in-law, Dick and Jean Miller; brother, Lyle; and son-in-law, Nels Christensen.
