Marlys Yvonne Smith, 72, Minneapolis and formerly of Sturgis, died Friday, November 12, 2010, at the St. Therese nursing home in Minneapolis.

Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with a rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Michel Mulloy officiating. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Marlys was born August 22, 1938, at Sturgis, SD, to Louis F. and Gertrude A. (Bachand) Chaney. She went to grade school in Bear Butte Valley and graduated from St. Martin's Academy in 1956. Marlys was employed by the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC, from 1957 until 1964. She moved back to South Dakota and worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

She married John H. Smith at Sturgis, SD, on November 7, 1964.

Marlys was a homemaker and loved working in her garden and with her flowers, especially her roses. She made quilts, embroidered dish towels, and made clothes for her family. She managed her husband's Hay Grinding business and took care of her father for several years.

Marlys was active at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the St. Theresa Circle while she lived in Sturgis.

She was active in her children's and grandchildren's lives and that was her enjoyment.

She moved to Rapid City in 1995 and then to Minneapolis in 2008. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Dianne (Darin) Mansfield, Minneapolis, MN, and Darlene (Shawn) Veurink, Rapid City; sisters, Dolores Donahey, Sturgis, and Connie Evers, Sturgis; 4 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Wayne; two brothers, Louie and Paul Chaney; and sisters, Dorothy Hayes and Joan Pattison.

A memorial has been established to St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis.
