Martin Wehner, 86, Whitewood, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A rosary begins at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.
Martin was born May 10, 1923, at Gladstone, ND, to Joseph and Anna (Krug) Wehner. After graduating from Gladstone High School he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater with the 6th Emergency Rescue Squadron. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Sturgis where he began working for the Ft. Meade VA Hospital in January of 1946.
On July 12, 1946, he married Marjorie Ogle at Gladstone, ND.
He resumed working at Ft. Meade as a nurses aide. They lived in Sturgis until 1955 when they moved to Whitewood.
Martin retired from Ft. Meade after 37 years of service, on March 31, 1983.
He enjoyed fishing and playing the slots in Deadwood.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie Wehner, Whitewood; son Don (Pat) Wehner, Rapid City; daughter Anita (Randy) Swanson, North Platte, NE; three brothers, Frank Wehner, Richardton, ND, Roger (Joan) Wehner, Dublin, Georgia; Allen Wehner, Odessa, MO; sisters, Ann Toth, Whitewood, Faye (Ron) Carlson, Whitewood, Dorothy Wiege, Whitewood, Sharon (Frank) Myers, Nisland; daughter in law, Irene Wehner, Whitewood; grandchildren, Abby and Adam Wehner, Whitewood, Dawn Marie Valentine, Seattle, WA, Jessica (Rick) Tulk, Evans, CO; great grandchildren, Stephanie (Ryan) Nakano, Dalton Tulk; also numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Gary Wehner; two brothers, Richard and Carl Wehner; sister, Rose Marie; and his parents, Anna and Joe Wehner.
