Obituary

Marvin Lester Hayford, 79, Sturgis passed away at his home, on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

In the small rural town of Winner, SD, on August 25, 1941, Harold and Ella Mae (Miller) Hayford welcomed their 11 th child, Marvin Lester into the world completing their family.

He grew up on a farm and learned the value of hard work. He developed a love for the outdoors and was very fond of fishing.

Marvin began his career at Homestake Mine as a diamond driller for 27 years. In this time, he met and married the lovely, Sherry Eilert, they raised 4 sons, Marvin Jr., BK, Lonnie, and Patrick, never a dull moment. He loved to bowl which he passed on to his sons and grandsons. He loved doing things with his family like outings and 4 th of July celebrations. Marvin took on a more dangerous job than mining when he started paper routs with his sons, dealing with customers and the joy of waking the boys in the early morning hours to go to work. He loved being a Papa to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retirement he enjoyed crafting with Sherry, working of many projects together. He loved watching professional wrestling and yes even the golden girls with Betty White. Something seemed to be missing and Sherry was the one to fill this, she adopted a little rescue dog named Soncho who became his faithful companion and fierce protector. They enjoyed sitting out on the front deck absorbing vitamin D and keeping watch on the neighborhood enjoying life. But sadly, on June 30 th God sent his angels on swift wings taking him home. Leaving us broken hearted at the loss. We now have to say our goodbye to papa this wonderful soul to which we had the honor of having him in our lives, leaving us with so many fond memories.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry; 4 sons, Marvin Jr (Sharla), BK, Lonnie, and Patrick (Cody); one brother, Leanord Hayford, VA; 19 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 grand dogs; his faithful companion Soncho; 2 great-grandchildren due in December; and many nieces and nephews and daughters-in-law that meant the world to him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and 9 siblings.
