Obituary

Marvin August Kari, 82, Black Hawk, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at his residence in Black Hawk.

Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Rosary services will begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Fr. Arnold Kari and Fr. Mark McCormick officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Marvin was born February 8, 1927 at Bixby, SD, to Peter and Katherine (Sperle) Kari. He grew up on the home ranch at Bixby before joining the US Army in 1950. He served his country honorably in the Korean War, for which he received the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Marvin spent most of his life as a rancher with a special fondness for horses, until he retired to Bison in 1997. For health reasons, he moved to Black Hawk, SD, to be with family.

Marvin was a member of the Bison VFW Post and the American Legion.

Survivors include four brothers, John (Kathryn) Kari, Sturgis, SD, Walter (Luvern) Kari, Spearfish, Mark (Bernice) Kari, Bison, SD, Raymond (Kay) Kari, St. Onge, SD; two sisters, Velma Johnson, Sturgis, SD, Katherine Schlosser, Belle Fourche; brother in law, Lloyd Rogers, Black Hawk; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Kari and Josephine Rogers.

A memorial has been established to the Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills.
