Lorraine was born October 22, 1922, in Redfield, SD, to Clarence Leslie and Mary Ellen (Hahn) Mannings. She received her education in the Redfield schools. After graduating from Redfield High School in 1940, she worked as a clerk in the Ben Franklin Store and the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
On October 21, 1945, she and Clarence N. Grant were married. They farmed for nine years northeast of Redfield. In the next ten years, they lived in Parker and Mitchell and moved to Pierre in 1965. After their three children were in school, Lorraine clerked in a variety store and later worked for the SD Department of Agriculture and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. While with the USFWS, she received a Certificate of Honor for Superior Service. She retired in 1982, enjoying her family, neighbors, and friends.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Lorraine served on the election board for many years. In 2003, she moved to Whitewood making her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
Mary "Lorraine" Grant, 91, Whitewood, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
She leaves to mourn a daughter, Candace (Keith) Randen, Whitewood; son, David (Rhonda) Grant, Rapid City; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Floyd Gjernes, Redfield, SD; sister-in-law, Esther Grant, Howard, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; son, Russell; granddaughter, Jody; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
A memorial has been established.
