IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Lee
Hathaway
May 7, 1952 – August 4, 2016
Mary Lee Hathaway, 64, Bison, SD, passed away on August 4th after a five year battle with cancer; while being comforted by family members at the Regional Hospice House in Rapid City, SD.
Mary Lee was born in Lemmon, SD on May 7, 1952 to August and Lorraine Sonn. She grew up on a farm North of Lemmon and was a 1970 graduate of Lemmon High School. Upon completing high school she attended Dickinson State University. On July 22, 1972 she married Dennis Hathaway and they made their home in Bison, SD. They had two children, Kelly and Brady. Mary Lee worked many years at the Perkins County Courthouse and Dakota Plains Federal Credit Union. In 2013, she and her love, Wade Chapman purchased their dream house in Piedmont where she retired to in 2015.
She loved her family beyond measure and was always ready to prepare a feast whenever someone might be stopping in to visit. She had a green thumb and it was evident to anyone who had ever seen her yards. She had a keen eye and love of landscaping, and could often be found working in her yard on numerous different projects. Her humor was enjoyed by not only her close family and friends, but community members who would often witness the shenanigans she and her Red Hatter gals were up to. The laughs were endless. Her home was always in pristine order, and was decorated elaborately for each holiday. Her yearly Christmas light display was looked forward to by all. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye, and close behind them were her pets. Gifts from her came from the heart, often being something she had hand crafted. She was always dreaming of sandy beaches and a cold drink in her hand to relax.
Survivors include her soulmate of 8 years, Wade Chapman, Lodgepole, SD; daughter, Kelly (Denton) McGregor, Piedmont, SD; son, Brady (Charity) Hathaway, Bison, SD; grandkids: Mason, Jada & Karsyn McGregor, Piedmont, SD; Joshua Cook & baby Hathaway (due in January), Bison, SD; 3 brothers: Mike (Penny) Sonn, San Jose, CA; Roger Sonn, Hettinger, ND; David (Vicky) Sonn, Lemmon, SD; 1 sister, Linda (Jim) Nehl, Keldron, SD; many nieces, nephews and special friends.
