Mary Hawley, 90, of Spearfish and formerly of Sturgis, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Belle Fourche Health Care.
Mary Kathryn (Lamley) Hawley was born August 13, 1922, in Mitchell, SD, to Earl and Emma Lamley, soon moving to Wessington Springs where a brother and sister joined the family. She grew up on the farm and attended rural schools. She attended high school in Wessington Springs and graduated in 1940. Then the following year she attended Wessington Springs Jr. College. With a one year certificate she taught rural schools several years.
In 1945, she married Donald Hawley of Wessington Springs. He entered the army and served with the infantry with the occupation forces in Japan. Mary continued to teach while he was in the service and met him in Seattle when he was discharged. They lived in Lemoore, California, for about a year and moved to San Diego where Don's brother lived. After Jerry was born, they decided to move back to South Dakota in 1948. They farmed for seven years and Richard and Roger were born in Wessington Springs. They decided to move to Sturgis where Donald drove gas truck for Moyle Petroleum. Donna was born the next year. When Donna was 5 years old, Mary went to summer school and taught in rural schools until she earned her BA degree at Black Hills College. She taught a total of 26 years, many in Sturgis teaching third grade.
Mary was active in the United Methodist Church, serving on the building committee, UMW, member of Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary, Northern Hills Retired Teachers, LCE Club, Sturgis Senior Citizens, and Jail Ministry. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, bowling, camping, motorcycling, picnics, went on 7 chartered bus tours, and went on a mission trip to Alaska. The past four years, Mary made many new friends at Edgewood Vista where she resided.
Survivors include Jerry and Linda Hawley (Belle Fourche), Richard and Donna Hawley (Sturgis), Roger and Connie Hawley (Spearfish), and Donna Sigman (Summerset); her sister, Emogene Elliott, (Pine Grove, California); eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; her brother, Robert Lamley; granddaughter, Michelle Hawley; great-granddaughters, Jessica Moore and Skyler Hawley; and son-in-law, Alen Sigman.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Sturgis with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
