Obituary

Mary Catherine Osborn Jensen, 93, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at the Central Meade County Community Center.

Mary was born May 14, 1932, in Asotin County, Washington, to James and Elizabeth Allen Osborn. She attended the majority of her school years in Asotin County until transferring to Clarkston, WA, during her senior year, where she graduated. After graduation, she attended one year at New England School of Theology in Boston, Massachusetts. After returning to Washington, she worked as a switchboard operator.

Mary was introduced to her husband, John Jensen, through her brother, Jim Osborn, who was married to John’s cousin, Arlene (Pearson). Arlene’s father encouraged John to meet Mary during a visit to Washington. After meeting, the two proceeded to write letters of correspondence and fell in love. They were soon married on June 22, 1956, in Clarkston, WA. The pair took their honeymoon via a multi-state road trip to the Jensen family ranch near Union Center, SD.

The couple soon welcomed their first son, Bobby, in May 1957, followed by their daughter, Kathy, in September 1958. Son Larry joined the family in August 1960, and youngest son Jerry rounded out the troops in February 1962. In addition to raising kids, Mary raised a big garden every year to help feed her growing family. With fond memories, Kathy, Larry, and Jerry said they spent quality time with Mom picking and snapping green beans. Mary was often found in her kitchen, cooking homegrown vegetables and beef, enjoying gospel music or the local radio playing in the background.

When the kids were young, Mary enjoyed fellowship with their Meade County neighbors through the Extension Club. As a member, she participated in monthly meetings where everyone shared homemade desserts and received a lesson from the local extension office. While the family was busy with daily ranch life—raising cattle and barn lambing hundreds of head of sheep—they still made time to visit family in Washington. Many special memories were made on those two-day road trips in the family’s 1964 Chevy.

Mary was a devout reader of her Bible and attended church at Fairpoint and Union Center Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing special hymns at church during her younger years. Kathy whole-heartedly said, “Mom wanted all of her family together in heaven.” Granddaughter Jennifer has fond memories of Mary supporting her and her brother, Jason, in attending Rodeo Bible Camp in Kadoka, SD, during their early youth. The seeds of faith that Mary sowed decades ago are being reaped today through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The grandkids also have special memories of Grandma Mary’s kitchen, including her bread and butter. All favored it, and we agree it was “the best in all the land,” served with that iconic burnt orange butter dish and a readily available knife laid across the lid. Grandpa and Grandma’s house was also especially known for the abundance of flavors and varieties of Schwan’s ice cream. From drumsticks to ice cream sandwiches and buckets of flavors, there was never a limit on consumption, nor did the weather matter. Ice cream was a staple!

In later years, John and Mary especially enjoyed the Mountain Music Show in the Black Hills with friends and traveling to Branson, MO, making special memories with family. The pair could often be found traveling to Oklahoma to visit Kathy and her family, or around western South Dakota, attending the grandkids’ school programs, livestock shows, rodeos, and simply meeting up with anyone they could. Everyone especially loved Black Hills get-togethers and gathering at the family ranch when time allowed.

John and Mary also enjoyed John’s Army reunions, where they vacationed in Spearfish and North Dakota. They especially loved eating at the Colonial House in Rapid City, and Mary particularly enjoyed the entrée of steak tips with a fresh slice of pie. Mary was an advocate for her health, leaning into homeopathic options and taking her “minnies and vitties.” She was a faithful caretaker to her husband, John, especially after they moved to Spearfish in early 2015. Throughout the last decade, Mary enjoyed senior living in Spearfish and spent the final 18 months of her life at the Sturgis Care Center.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Robert John (Bobby); parents, James and Elizabeth Osborn; sister, Rachel Hodgson; brother, John Osborne; son-in-law, Walter Giblet; and grandson, John Dusty Jensen.
