Sturgis ~ Mary K. (Koval) Anderson, 104, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care. She was born June 11, 1908 in a small coal mining town in Illinois. Mary served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1945, stationed in France. She was the oldest member of the Women's Army Corps at the time of her death. Mary K. married William Anderson (U.S. Air Force) prior to coming back to the States in 1945. They moved to Rapid City, SD in 1946. Mary and her husband owned a home along Rapid Creek near Johnson Siding during the 1972 flood. The two were involved in various business adventures in the area over the years making them well known by many. Mary moved to Rapid City after the death of her husband in 1982. She entered Fox Run Assisted Living at the age of 92 after her eyesight began to fail. She continued to be active during her years in assisted living including during her time at Fairmont Grand Manor Regional Senior Care where she stayed until entering the nursing home in May of 2011. Family was always treasured by Mary K. as she received phone calls and visits from relatives ongoing through her time in Assisted Living in Rapid City and later the nursing home in Sturgis. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Mary was known for her warm heart, keen whit, and love of God. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic parish in Rapid City for years and continued to attend to devotions until her last days. A rosary could always be found at her side. Mary K. had no lack of friends. Her personality drew you in immediately. Mary K. was preceded in death by her husband, William, Sr; her parents, John and Elizabeth Koval; and her older siblings Ann and John, Jr, and younger sister Ethel. Mary K. is survived by her son, William, Jr (Seattle, Washington); grandchildren, Heather Allard (Sam), and Billy Anderson; along with her nieces and nephew. In lieu of a funeral, visitation will be held October 8, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Black Hills Funeral Home, 1440 Junction Avenue, Sturgis, SD. Graveside Service will be at 10:00 a.m. October 9, 2012 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain (Ret.) Herbert B. Cleveland officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard and the South Dakota Army National Guard.
