Mary Frances Terpening, 56, Sturgis, passed away at her home on Tuesday, June 1, 2010.
A memorial service will be 10:00am Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Fr. John Lule officiating. A second memorial service will be 10:00am Monday, June 7, 2010 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wagner, SD with Fr. Richard Baumberger officiating.
Mary was born on August 16, 1953 at Pickstown, SD to Clarence and Elizabeth Minahan. She lived on a farm 7 miles southeast of Geddes, SD with her parents, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters. When she was 17, the family moved to a home in Geddes. Mary was a typical farm kid, doing chores and helping outdoors, but she preferred being indoors cooking, baking, and sewing. She attended a country school near her home through 8th grade and then Geddes High School, graduating in 1971. She then attended the University of South Dakota at Springfield earning a Secretarial Diploma in 1972. Mary worked for several insurance businesses in Tyndall and Wagner, SD, as an independent agent, and as a secretary for Dr. Honke and Brookman in Wagner, SD. On June 21, 1974 she married Thomas Terpening of Wagner. Mary and Thomas had a son, Jake, in April 1983. She began working for the Corp. of Engineers at Pickstown, SD in 1983. Tom, Mary, and Jake moved to Sturgis in 1994 where she continued her employment with the Corp. of Engineers in Rapid City until retirement in 2008.
Mary often said she wanted a dozen children, but was blessed with just one son, Jacob Arthur Terpening. She was a devoted mother to her son, but also shared her motherly love and attention with Jakes friends and her nieces and nephews. Mary was very creative and talented at many things including sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She shared her talents generously with many people over the years, always making things and giving them away to those she loved, continuing to do so even after her illness progressed.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her mother and father-in-law.
She is survived by her husband Thomas, her son Jake and his wife Kelsey, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and numerous relatives and friends.
