Obituary

Maxine Annetta O'Connell, 88, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2020, at her home in Rapid City, South Dakota.

She was born in Hot Springs, SD, on September 14, 1931, to Winfield and Jessie (Roe) Hill.

Maxine was the youngest of seven children raised on a ranch in Ardmore, SD. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1949 and married William O'Connell in 1952.  They set up house in Igloo, SD, raised two sons and enjoyed camping in the Black Hills and other states.  After the closure of Igloo, they moved to Illinois and then Missouri, but summers were always spent at her sister's cabin near Bluebell in Custer State Park with extended family and friends.

She moved back to South Dakota to be near family after her husband's death. She enjoyed reading, writing, crossword puzzles and stamp collecting.  She loved family reunions and organized quite a few through the years.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Doug (Charlene) of Sterling, IL, and Bruce (Theresa) of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Devin, Kellen and Aislinn of Sterling, IL; nephews, Richard (Beverly) Hill and family, Calvin (Julie) Hill and family, Dane (Jacqui) Hill and family, Bradley Hill and family; nieces, Karen Devine and family, Barbara (Bruce) Manning and family, and Kris (Jeff) DuBois and family.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her six siblings, Mervin, Everett, Virgil, Vincent, Lorraine and Keith; her husband, Bill; all of her sisters-in-law; and her nephew, Alan.

Cremation has taken place and a private memorial ceremony for her immediate family will be held at a future date.
