Obituary

Melvin D. Weyer, 65, passed away peacefully at home, Friday, March 29, 2013, after fighting cancer.

Melvin was born on March 13, 1948, in Deadwood, SD, to Elmer and Gertrude (Fluhrer) Weyer. He grew up in Sturgis, SD, and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1966. He married his first wife, Mary Jo Schaffner, in 1968. To this union three children were born: Quentin, Justin, and Melanie. In 2000, Mel married his second wife, Sally Kennedy Olsen, and welcomed into his life stepchildren, Shawn and Lisa.

In 1967, Mel began his 37-year career working for the VA Black Hills Health Care System. The latter years were devoted to working with veterans with PTSD as a readjustment counselor with the outpatient Substance Use/PTSD Program. In 2003, he retired from his work at the VA. Mel also served part-time with the Deadwood Police Department. In 2004, Mel began his job driving school bus for the Rapid City School District. He enjoyed driving bus and caring for the students who affectionately called him "Mr. Mel". Due to health reasons he medically retired in 2011.

Mel loved sports and was a loyal Denver Broncos fan. In his younger days, he played softball and through the years he was an avid bowler and golfer. Mel enjoyed the outdoors and liked hunting, fishing, gardening, and cruising down the highway on his motorcycle. He was raised in the Catholic faith as a child, but later came to know the Lord in a different and meaningful way and was baptized in 2000 at the First Baptist Church of the Northern Hills in Deadwood. He later became a member of the First Baptist Church in Rapid City and actively served in different leadership positions.

Survivors include his wife, Sally; two sons, Quentin (Pam) Weyer, Rapid Valley, and Justin (Lisa) Weyer, Sturgis; a daughter, Melanie (Ryan) Kaeding, Blair, NE; stepchildren, Shawn (Kathy) Olsen, Dupree, and Lisa (Jason) Stapert, Oak Harbor WA; a sister, Dixie (Al) Karlson, San Bernardino, CA; three brothers, William (Sandra) Weyer, Eureka CA, Edward (Lori) Weyer, Rapid City, and Merlin (Dianne) Weyer, Pierre; sisters-in-law, Norma Weyer, Sturgis, and Deloris Weyer, Box Elder; his first wife, Mary Jo (Dan) Egger, Rapid City; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Gertrude; two brothers, Jerry and Larry; three nieces; and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4th at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis. Celebration of Life will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, 707 St. Patrick St, Rapid City.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church for a camp scholarship program. Other memorials are also being established.
