Merle Dean Windedahl was born on June 29, 1932, on a farm in Carthage, South Dakota to Floyd and Inez Windedahl, and passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 4, 2020. Your children wish you a joyous celebration with God, your parents and loved ones in heaven.
Merle served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. Shortly after returning from the Korean War, Merle married the love of his life, Deannie Nearing, and together, they had 5 beautiful children. Susan, Jerry, Penny, Bill and Teresa, where they resided mostly in Kellogg, Idaho.
Merle moved back to South Dakota in the early 1980's to be closer to his parents and siblings. He enjoyed watching his western shows and taking care of his two cats. You could find Merle visiting with his friends at the local tavern, drinking his whiskey and water. He enjoyed traveling back to the Silver Valley to visit his family and friends.
Surviving are his children, Susan Trotter, Jerry Windedahl, Penny Windedahl, Bill Windedahl and Teresa Allen; his step-children, Julie, Trina and Shelly; his grandchildren, Brandy Thueson, Amy Brady, Heather Custis, Katie Clelland, Kristy Windedahl, Heath Marek, Miranda Marek, Stephanie Windedahl, Faythe Windedahl and Tayler Allen; his siblings, Marlys Beshara, Shirley Christie, Verlin Windedahl, LaVonne Gravelle and Jimmy Windedahl; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Inez Windedahl; his brother, Jerry Windedahl; grandson, Levi Marek; step-son, Jamie Footit; and his first wife, Deannie McNeal.
Merle will be laid to rest at the Black Hills National Cemetery. Please join us for a celebration of life at the Hideaway Bar on December 13, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. The family suggests to bring your favorite pie in memory of Merle, which was his favorite dessert.
