Obituary

Merrill Robert Lewis, 84, Sturgis, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Masonic services accompanied by Military Honors will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

Interment will be at the Restlawn Memory Gardens near Huron at a later date.

Merrill was born August 4, 1928, at Huron, SD, to Albert A. and Emily Anna (Kuck) Lewis. He grew up in Huron and graduated from High School in Huron. He went to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

Merrill entered the US Navy in January of 1946 and served until December 3, 1947. He returned to Huron and went back to work for the railroad. He retired from the Railroad in July of 1964 after 23 years of working for them. Merrill then did plumbing and heating work until 1975, at which time he started the Oil Well in Huron and sold it in 1979. He then went to Huron College and graduated in 1983.

Merrill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and was the recreational program director for Isla Blanca Park at South Padre Island in Texas from 1985-89. He was a member of the Firemen/Enginemen Union, the Masonic Lodge of Huron, and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include six children, Albert A. Lewis, Steven Lewis, Pam Ricard, Bob Lewis, Jim Lewis, and Scott Lewis; and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1963; one brother, Dale Lewis; and one sister, Lavina Brinkley.

A memorial has been established to the Huron Senior Citizens Center.
