Mildred was born December 21, 1930, in Fort Worth, TX, to the Rev. A.G. and Vergie (Lamb) Rietdorf. She attended school in Oklahoma and Nebraska. After moving to Bison, SD, in 1947, she graduated in 1948 and attended Sioux Falls College. She taught one year at the Scotch Cap School near Bison.
On June 18, 1950, she married her sweetheart, Berthold Fried and welcomed five children into their home on the farm near Meadow, SD. They celebrated over sixty-two years together before Bert's passing in 2013.
Mildred enjoyed working at Grand Electric Cooperative in Bison for 26 years. In 1996, Bert and Mildred retired and moved to Sturgis. Mildred was an exemplary volunteer with a servant's heart. She blessed others with her musical talents, including singing, playing the piano and organ, and directing choirs.
Mildred's faith and devotion to her family were of the utmost importance to her. She enjoyed membership in the Grace Baptist Church in Bison, and later the First Presbyterian Church in Whitewood, SD.
Mildred Marie Fried, 89, died Monday, May 25, 2020, in Sturgis, SD.
She is survived by her children, Jim (Diane) Fried, son-in-law, Dean Fudge, Thomas (Cathy) Fried, Susan (Bret) Allart, and Kimberly (Robert) Shannon; grandchildren, Stephania (Kelly) Smith, Drewn (Rachel) Fried, Megan (Philip) Emmons, Misty (Kirby) Taylor, Allison (Adam) Propeck, Matthew Fried, Andrew (Abby) Fried, Nathan (Katie) Allart, Amanda (Jason) Brengle, Crystal (Ian) Pistulka, and Michael (Holly) Shannon; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; and daughter, Maxine.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Whitewood Presbyterian Church, with funeral services beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the Whitewood Presbyterian Church.
