Obituary

Mildred C. LaBau, 82, Wessington, passed away July 18, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was a much loved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. God granted her wish of living in her own home at Wessington until he called her home.

Mildred C. LaBau was born Oct 12, 1923, to Elmer and Hazel (Davis) Krauter. She grew up and graduated from Wessington High School. She married Virgil D. LaBau on Feb. 19, 1942.

Millie worked many jobs as a young wife and mother. After her family moved into Wessington from the farm she worked at the Golden Rule Grocery Store, managed the telephone office when the switch boards were in use for eight party lines; and operated their restaurant. In 1956 they moved to Miller, SD, where she worked at Moen's Meat Market, Istas Bakery and for 22 years her love of nursing kept her at the Hand County Hospital. In 1977 she and Virgil moved to Rapid City, SD, where she continued her nursing at the Rapid City Regional Hospital and Black Hills Retirement Home. They managed the Big Sky Motel for eleven years until they returned to Wessington in 1988.

Millie loved being near her two sisters crafting and sewing for the local bazaars. They attended many parades and city celebrations together. Her spunky spirit kept her current on news, sports, politics and religion. She enjoyed her yard, wildlife and her home town. The love of her life though was her family. The kitchen table was always available, coffee on and she could fix up a meal with no effort.

Survivors include her two daughters; and her three sons; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Vernon; and three grandchildren, Jason, Shannon, and Valeen.

Inurnment at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Arrangements by Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
