Obituary

Nelda Eldora Chamberlain Rose, 99, of Sturgis, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at Sturgis Regional Hospital in Sturgis, SD.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present at 7:30 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs, SD.

Nelda was born June 9, 1912, at home near Johnstown, NE, to Fred and Eva (McCathron) Estabrook. She grew up in the sand hills, 30 miles south of Ainsworth, NE. Nelda graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1931, then attended Chadron State Teachers College in Chadron, NE, and Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD. She taught school in Fall River, Butte, and Meade County schools after teaching in Nebraska. All the schools were rural except the last 11 years in Sturgis Jr. High School. Nelda Retired in 1985.

Nelda married Cecil E. Chamberlain in Ainsworth, NE, on May 19, 1935. They lived in Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota. They moved to Sturgis in 1954. Cecil was a telegrapher and depot agent for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Cecil died September 3, 1958.

Nelda married Harold C. (Bill) Rose on December 27, 1959, in Sturgis, SD. Bill died August 3, 1992.

Nelda was a 50 year member of Rebekah Lodge, 50 year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Sturgis Senior Center, First Presbyterian Church in Whitewood, SD, and several bridge clubs.

She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Janice Marie (Bob) Reddick of Sturgis, SD; one son, Larry Layne (Jody) Chamberlain of Lakewood, CO; one stepson, William N. (Coleen) Rose of Lakewood, CO; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by both parents; both husbands; and a sister, Nellie Zillig.

A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Senior Center.
