Nickie was born to Blas and Helen Skvicalo on April, 2, 1931. Nickie enjoyed her childhood spending time with her two brothers, Blas and Pete. She attended St. Patrick's Catholic school and graduated from Lead High School. Nickie worked at various grocery stores in the Lead area until going to work for Fl. Thorpe as a jeweler.
Nickie was an avid sports enthusiast watching Notre Dame Football religiously as well as Yankee and Dodger baseball. Nickie became a very good bowler with the coaching of her brother, Pete. Nickie was a two-time South Dakota state bowling champion as well as tournament champion at various tournaments across the Midwest.
In January of 1974, Nickie married Elwood Johnson; the two of them spent a lot of time traveling around the Midwest visiting Elwood's brothers. Elwood spent time fly-fishing in Spearfish Canyon and hunting deer and antelope in the Black Hills and South Dakota prairies and Nickie would go with Elwood to spend time with her husband. Nickie was a devout Catholic attending mass every week until the onset of her illness. Nickie cherished her family; assisting them in any way possible.
Nickie Stella Johnson, 85, Sturgis, died Sunday, September 11, 2016, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.
Nickie will be greatly missed by her surviving family. Nickie is survived by her brother, Blas, and his wife, Lois Skvicalo; and several nieces and nephews.
Nickie was preceded in death by her father, Blas; mother, Helen; brother, Pete; infant brother, Blas; and her husband, Elwood.
A vigil will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel at 7:00 p.m.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday, September 15, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Timothy Castor officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
