Obituary

Norma N. Askvig, 86, Rapid City, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after battling cancer for the past six years.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Norma was born June 16, 1927, to Willie and Hazel (Kelley) Nelson on the family homestead near Hinsdale, MT. She was the fourth of six children.

On November 7, 1946, Norma married Ole Askvig in Glasgow, MT, where they resided until 1968 when they relocated to Rapid City.

Norma was always there for family, making sure that there was always plenty of love, food, and fun for everyone. She both gave and received her greatest joys from her family. The majority of her working career was spent as a grocery clerk. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, active in the Rapid City AA program, and Alano society.

Survivors include daughter, Betty (Mel) Potter, Newark, DE; son, Rick (Denise) Askvig, Rapid City; daughter, Sue (Don) Smalley, Sturgis; daughter, Lori (Wayne) Canfield, Rapid City; her grandchildren, Kevin Kopf, Scott and Melanie Potter, Jim (Samantha) Cranford, Robert Cranford, Richard Cranford, Martin (Angie) Cranford, Michelle (Mike) Carpenter, Jess (Kevin) Reid, Stacey (Tre) James, Dan (Heather) Smalley, Kayla Johnson, Rodney, Josh, and Paul (Becky) Weller; and a whole boatload of great-grandchildren (30 at last count). She is also survived by one sister, Marion (Terry) Palmer; sisters-in-law, Barb Nelson, Dorothy Byrd, Pat (Don) Theisen, and Fran Lee; brothers-in-law, Lloyd (Ora), Dick (Darlene), and Al (Lois) Askvig; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Ole in 1999; their daughter, Sharon in 1998; her parents; brothers, Harold, Eldon, and Donald Nelson; sister, Edrie McColly; and brother and sister-in-laws from both sides of the family.

Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and to the Alano Society.
