Norman O. Barstad, 94, Ft. Meade, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.
Committal services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain Ralph Vencill officiating and military honors by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.
Norman was born September 24, 1915 at rural Almont, ND, to Thorwald and Olga (Olson) Barstad.
He attended Feland District Country School for 8 years and then attended Almont High School for 2 years. He was in the CCC's and did seasonal farm work.
Norman was inducted into the US Army on July 17, 1941. He served in the North African Campaign and the invasion of Northern Italy. He was wounded in Italy and spent several months in hospital. He was honorably discharged December 4, 1944. He received the Purple Heart for his service.
Norman worked construction for several years until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and spent many hours with his boat "running the river". He hitched up his camper to his pickup truck and was off visiting relatives or fishing. He was a member of the Rhame American Legion Post.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alice Handegard and brother Arnold Barstad. Stepmother Ragna Olson Aanstad Barstad and step brother Salmer Aanstad and step sisters, Louise Handegard, Karine Jalbert Miller; also half sisters, Thelma Barstad Bushnell and Ruby Barstad Kilen.
Survivors include his half brother, Obert Barstad and half sister Alta Barstad Schaar, Scranton, ND.
