Opal Nelson Stomprud, 91, Faith, died Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the Opal Community Church near Opal with Pastor Sam Cowles officiating. Burial will follow at the Monument Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Opal was born at White Butte, SD, on November 18, 1919, to Oscar and Lerie (Braddock) Gordon. She graduated from high school at Haynes, ND, in 1937. She worked at a drugstore, the ASCS office, and as a waitress. She also worked in the welfare office at the court house in Bowbells, ND.

She was married to Lloyd Nelson in Hettinger, ND, on November 18, 1941. They lived in Kenmare, ND, and farmed on her in-laws homestead. In 1954, they moved to Fort Collins, CO, and returned to Haynes in 1956. In 1962, they moved back to Kenmare where she was a member of the Elmdale Lutheran Church in Niobe, ND. Her husband, Lloyd, died on February 19, 1990.

Opal married Chester "Chet" Stomprud at Niobe, ND, on November 27, 1993, in the same marriage ceremony as her grandson. They moved to Chet's ranch near Faith. Opal was a member of the Opal Community Church. She loved all flowers, especially her roses. She also enjoyed gardening. She liked to be outdoors.

Survivors include her husband, Chet of Faith; six children, Lowell (LaVonne) Nelson of Fullerton, CA, daughter-in-law, Myrna Nelson of Kenmare, ND, Llauren (Jean) Nelson of St. Cloud, MN, Linda (David) Fimrite of St. Cloud, MN, Donald Stomprud of Faith, Oscar (Barbara) Stomprud of Edmond, OK, and Betty (David) Zwetzig of Newell; one sister, Ruby Cook of Trautdale, OR; 20 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd; one son, Russell; her parents; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.
