Obituary

Odessa, Texas - Palmer E. Carlson, 86 of Odessa, TX and formally of Lead, SD, died August 8, 2011 at the West Texas V.A. Medical Health Care System in Big Spring, TX. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. Palmer was born in Zahl, N.D. to Martin and Caroline (Rise) Carlson on March 14, 1925. He had three brothers, Clarence, Severin, and Martin Jr. as well as 3 sisters, Corrine Haug, Mary Sveet and Judith Sveet. Palmer attended school in Hanks, N.D. and served his nation during World War II in the Navy. In 1946 he returned to North Dakota to work as a farmer. Then in 1950 he married Beulah L. McKay of Fortuna, N.D. Together they moved to South Dakota eventually settling in Lead, South Dakota where Palmer worked as a miner in the Homestake Mining Company until his retirement in 1982. Palmer loved to fish, hunt, and farm. Survivors include a son, Elvin (Thyra) Carlson, Odessa, TX; two daughters, Deborah Huber, Sturgis, SD and Ilene Carlson, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister, Mary Sveet, Crosby, ND; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah in 1971; his parents; a son, David; one daughter, Pamela; three brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 15 at Black Hills Funeral Home at 1440 Junction Avenue in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16 at the funeral home with Chaplain (Ret.) Herbert B. Cleveland officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, where he will be laid to rest beside his wife.
