Obituary

On May 6, 1951, Patty was welcomed by Robert and Bertha Ford, along with her big brother, Bob. Soon after, younger sister Debbie and younger brother Kyle joined the family, making it complete.

Patty was born in Colorado, but the family made Deadwood their home at the top of the hill of Grizzly Gulch. They raised dairy cows, which Patty often spoke of when she milked them alongside her father and pitched hay during the early days. Patty attended Deadwood High School before enlisting in the US Navy in 1969 and serving until 1972. After her time in the service, Patty returned to the place she always called home. In 1973, Patty had her daughter, Connie, while working at F.L. Thorpe. Then, in 1979, her second daughter, Tammie, was born. Patty started her career at the Deadwood Hospital in 1980. She worked in the hospital kitchen for 37 years until her well-deserved retirement. But in true Patty fashion, she continued to work hard, being the primary caregiver for Connie. For many years, Patty devoted herself to caring for all those around her with everything she had, never hesitant to help a stranger or feed a friend.

Patty always had personality and character in every aspect of her life. She fought hard for what she wanted and was as stubborn as they came. Many memories include her antics that carried on for years, from picking up hitchhikers to baking 25 dozen cookies for a fundraiser, only to accidentally triple the recipe. She was tough, with no hesitation to save an animal… even if it didn’t want or need to be saved. Her animals truly filled her heart with joy as she cherished every one of them, even the chickens!

Her soft heart and caring soul are now at peace. Patty leaves behind her daughter, Tammie McKenzie (Mike); granddaughters, Devan and Kadence; brothers, Bob Ford and Kyle Ford; sister, Debbie Reynolds; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Patty was preceded in death by her father, Robert; mother, Bertha; and daughter, Connie.

The family would like to send the utmost and special thanks to the Kadoka Nursing Home, friends, and family who made Patty a part of their family and provided her with the best care. The wonderful laughs and the hugs will not soon be forgotten. Special thanks also go out to the Phillip Hospital for their amazing care and thoughtful staff.
