Pearl L. Trohkimoinen, 89, formerly of Sturgis, died Monday, September 23, 2013, at Tender Care Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. with the family present from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 30, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Henrique Fleming officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Pearl was born September 13, 1924, to Robert and Pauline (Olson) Smith on their ranch near Nisland. She attended school at Nisland, Riverside, and graduated from 8th grade at the Crook City School. She then attended the school at Whitewood and graduated from Spearfish High School in 1942. Following her graduation, Pearl worked at Northwestern Bell in Sturgis for several years.
Pearl married Elmer Trohkimoinen on November 20, 1949, in Sturgis. They lived in Sturgis where they raised their family.
Pearl worked at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center as a telephone operator until her retirement in 1989. She also was actively involved in ranching until well into her 80's. Pearl also cared for her disabled brother for many years.
Pearl was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Mary Circle. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, and cooking. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family dearly and devoted her life to them.
Survivors include one son, Gary (Jan) Trohkimoinen, Buffalo Lake, MN; two daughters, Kathy (Chuck) Natalie, Edmond, OK, and Marie (Bob) Kaufman, Whitewood, SD; six grandsons, Jeff (Kristin) Trohkimoinen, Scott (Jen) Trohkimoinen, Charles (Autumn Dillon) Natalie, Paul (Jessica Martinez) Natalie, William (Holly) Kaufman, and Alex Kaufman; five great-grandchildren, Avery, Isaac, Abby, Jack, and Blake; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Alta Reuppel; and two brothers, Marvin Smith and Harley Smith.
A memorial has been established to Grace Lutheran Church.
